Technical overview
The Simoco TETRA Gateway is the network gateway designed for the TETRA network operator that needs to extend their trunking network coverage and functionality to users operating outside TETRA terrestrial repeater coverage — agents in rural areas without TETRA coverage, traveling supervisors who need network access from their smartphones, or vehicles equipped with dispatch tablets instead of embedded TETRA radios — without the cost and complexity of deploying new TETRA repeaters in each uncovered zone.
Simoco's proprietary TETRA-IP interconnection protocol encapsulates TETRA voice traffic (4.567 kbps ACELP codec in protected mode) and TETRA network signaling (Short Data Service, Status, Emergency, Group Call) over IP/RTP sessions, transmitting audio with full signaling fidelity over any IP data network — 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, corporate MPLS — to the gateway that reinjects it into the TETRA infrastructure as if the call came from a standard TETRA radio registered on the network.
The extension to Android and iOS application clients — via the Simoco Push-To-Talk Client app compatible with consumer smartphones — allows a supervisor with an iPhone connected to the corporate Wi-Fi network to participate in the security center's TETRA talk groups, receive group calls, listen to field agent transmissions, and transmit with the app PTT at the same call priority level assigned in the TETRA network, without field agents with physical TETRA radios perceiving any difference in audio quality or group signaling.
