Technical overview
The Simoco Radio over IP Gateway is the voice over IP gateway designed for the enterprise or institution with a TETRA or DMR trunking network at its central headquarters and a set of remote sites — electrical substations, mining extraction facilities, highway control posts — that need trunk network access for coordination with the operations center, but where the cost of deploying own radio repeaters at each site (towers, antennas, solar power equipment, microwave links) is not economically justified versus using the corporate WAN network or commercial LTE operator network already contracted at those sites.
The gateway encapsulates TETRA (ETSI TS 102 636) and DMR (ETSI TS 102 361) voice traffic over RoIP (Radio over IP) protocol via G.711 8 kbps or G.729A 4.4 kbps audio encoding, including talk group signaling, source radio ID, PTT status, and call priority, to transmit over any available IP link — fiber, MPLS, internet VPN, 4G LTE — to the central trunking network server where it is decoded and routed to the destination talk group as if the remote site had its own TETRA/DMR repeater.
End-to-end latency under 80 ms — measured over a 4G LTE link with 20 ms jitter — is the key specification that differentiates the gateway from generic VoIP solutions: at 80 ms latency tactical conversation feels natural to the user, while at 150 ms or more the perceived delay in half-duplex PTT transmissions disrupts operational communication flow. Configurable QoS priority ensures RoIP traffic takes precedence over corporate data traffic on the same WAN link during active voice transmissions.
