Technical overview
The Rolatube CFRP Antenna Boom applies the same technology as the System 50/75/100 masts to horizontal and variable-angle mounting arms: a bi-stable carbon fiber laminate that deploys into a rigid tubular structure as it exits the reel, without tools or locking mechanisms. Its primary function is to mount directional antennas — VHF/UHF yagi, SATCOM panels, microwave MIMO antennas — at a distance from the main mast to eliminate mast backscatter interference on antenna gain.
In portable SATCOM systems, backscatter from a metal mast reduces the effective dish gain by up to 3 dBi when the mast passes within the antenna's secondary lobe. A 1.5m CFRP boom that offsets the SATCOM dish from the mast axis and electromagnetically isolates it recovers those 3 dBi with no weight increase in the support structure. At 100 kg EIRP on Ka-band link, 3 dBi represents the difference between a SATCOM terminal operating on margin and one with link reserve.
The Rolatube Antenna Boom is supplied with adapters for the most common mast mounts (1.5-inch standard tube, extended Picatinny rail, and universal tripod photographic 3/8" mount) and supports tip loads of up to 5 kg in the 1m version — sufficient for 5-element UHF yagi antennas or 45 cm SATCOM panels.
