Technical overview
The Galvion Batlskin Mandible Guard is the ballistic mandible protection designed for the special forces operator who needs lower facial area protection during building assault and vehicle transport operations — where concrete wall ricochet fragments and improvised IED shrapnel frequently impact the lower facial area not covered by conventional ballistic helmets — without accepting the visibility and breathing penalty imposed by fixed-opening rigid mandible guards that force the operator to remove the entire helmet to drink water or communicate orders in a low voice.
The dual-axis stainless steel hinge allows folding the mandible upward and securing it in elevated position (over the helmet visor) in 3 seconds with one hand via a pressure-release clip — without disconnecting the mandible from the helmet — so the operator can speak, drink, or use an oxygen mask without losing the main helmet's ballistic protection. When the threat requires lower facial protection, the operator lowers the mandible and locks it in combat position with the same clip in 2 seconds.
The heat-moldable UHMWPE design allows custom fitting to the wearer's mandibular morphology by heating the piece to 75°C for 3 minutes and adapting it directly on the face, eliminating the gap between the mandible guard and the chin that generates noise when walking and that in laboratory fragment tests allows ingress of small-caliber lateral splinters. The 35% ventilation area via 4mm perforations in the lower zone reduces moisture and CO₂ accumulation in the space between the mandible guard and the face during prolonged use.
