Kalkitech Smart Meter Gateway DLMS/COSEM to CIM IEC 61968 Gateway for Advanced Metering AMI Integration in Distribution Management Systems

The Kalkitech Smart Meter Gateway is the integration gateway designed for electricity distribution companies that have deployed or are deploying advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) with smart meters that speak DLMS/COSEM (IEC 62056) — the de-facto smart meter communication standard in Europe and Latin America — and need to integrate consumption, power quality, and meter status data into their Distribution Management Systems (DMS), Outage Management Systems (OMS), and Meter Data Management Systems (MDM) based on the CIM IEC 61968 data model.

The gateway acts as a head-end data concentrator: it establishes DLMS reading sessions with up to 5,000 smart meters from different manufacturers (Landis+Gyr, Itron, Elster, Iskraemeco, L&G, ZIV) via available communication channels — PLC BPL over the low-voltage network, GPRS/4G, RF mesh, or fiber optic — and normalizes data from all meters to the standard CIM IEC 61968 data model, making the DMS/MDM not need to know the manufacturer or firmware version of each meter. Polling is configurable per meter group from 15 minutes (for real-time dynamic tariffing) to 24 hours (for monthly billing), with read prioritization in case of communication channel congestion.

The non-technical loss detection module analyzes differences between energy supplied by the distribution transformer (measured by the transformer IED via IEC 61850) and the sum of energy recorded in all customer meters on the feeder — identifying energy fraud, illegal taps, and meter failures with ±0.8% precision of total supplied, without manual physical inspection of meters.
