Technical overview
The Kalkitech GPS Precision Time Synchronizer is the time synchronization module designed for the most demanding use case in smart power grids: the high-voltage substation where synchronization failure between protection IEDs from different manufacturers — during a busbar arc fault or large-magnitude grid disturbance — can result in incorrect automatic circuit breaker tripping that leaves entire regions without supply, while post-fault analysis without coherent timestamps makes it impossible to determine the exact sequence of events that preceded the incident.
The unit receives L1 GPS signal with an active roof antenna (included), extracts UTC time with ±100 ns accuracy relative to Coordinated Universal Time — the reference required by IEC 61850-9-3 for synchrophasors and disturbance recorders (DFR) in 220 kV and 500 kV substations — and distributes that time reference simultaneously in three protocols: IRIG-B 002-B (AM encoding on 1 kHz carrier) for legacy protection IEDs, IEEE 1588 PTPv2 (IEEE C37.238 profile for power networks) for substation Ethernet switches and merging units, and NTP/SNTP for SCADA historical data servers and supervisory HMIs.
Holdover with OCXO (Oven-Controlled Crystal Oscillator) maintains accuracy to <1 μs/hour when GPS signal is lost due to adverse conditions — electrical storm with antenna interference, signal blocking in underground control rooms — ensuring protection IEDs maintain synchronization within IEC 61850 tolerance during the most critical GPS loss periods. Four IRIG-B outputs with 2 kV galvanic isolation protect receiving IEDs from common-mode voltages induced by the electromagnetic field of adjacent power transformers.
