Technical overview
The Polo Marconi UHF Airborne is the airborne UHF radio designed for helicopter missions where coordinated communication with ground forces in the military UHF band (225-400 MHz) is the primary requirement — coordination of special forces insertion and extraction, artillery fire control from aircraft, SAR coordination with ground units — and where civilian VHF aviation radios and commercial UHF radios do not meet military aviation power, encryption, and certification requirements.
AM/FM modulation selection in the same 225-400 MHz range allows operating on military air traffic control AM frequencies (for communication with base tower and other aircraft) and tactical FM infantry frequencies (to communicate directly with ground units of the same UHF team) without changing equipment or needing two separate radios in the cockpit — a critical limitation in utility helicopters with limited avionics space.
DO-160G certification (sections 8 vibration, 7.3 temperature and altitude, 20 RF) guarantees the radio maintains performance specifications under helicopter avionics environmental conditions: rotor structural vibration 5-500 Hz at 2G amplitude, operating temperature -55°C to +70°C (equivalent to high-altitude flight in the Peruvian Andes), and pressure altitude up to 15,000 feet (4,572 m) for operations on the Andean plateau where Peruvian Armed Forces helicopters routinely operate on high-mountain missions.
