Technical specifications
Technical overview
The Polo Marconi HF Modem is the high-frequency data modem designed to transform any existing HF radio — from MORAD fleet radios to HF base stations at installations — into a high-speed data channel for tactical messaging, secure email, intelligence file transfer, and command database access without modifying radio hardware or installing proprietary firmware.
The modem operates at data speeds of 9.6 kbps, 19.2 kbps, 38.4 kbps, and 64 kbps automatically selected according to HF propagation link quality, using military standards STANAG 4539 (HF high-speed physical layer), STANAG 5066 (HF ARQ data link protocol), and MIL-STD-188-110C to guarantee interoperability with NATO allied force HF systems. The ARQ (Automatic Repeat reQuest) error detection and correction from STANAG 5066 compensates for propagation interruptions that characterize the ionospheric HF channel without requiring manual operator retransmission.
The included tactical messaging management software — compatible with BroadWave HF IP and STANAG 5066 over IP — allows sending and receiving text messages, attachments, and tactical forms with configurable priority (FLASH, IMMEDIATE, PRIORITY, ROUTINE) from any terminal connected to the modem via USB or RS-232, without requiring STANAG protocol knowledge from the operator.
