Technical overview
Kalkitech's IED Test Set closes the most critical gap in the IEC 61850 substation commissioning cycle: verifying that each relay, gateway, and RTU behaves exactly according to the SCL/SCD configuration before connecting the substation to the SEIN grid. A configuration error in a protection IED does not manifest under normal conditions — it appears only during an actual fault, when response time matters in milliseconds. Consequences can be the unwanted tripping of an entire busbar or failure to operate during a bolted fault in a 220 kV substation.
The equipment generates GOOSE signals with transmission times <4 ms, identical to what a real relay would generate during a fault. It also injects Sampled Value trains (IEC 61850-9-2 LE) to verify differential protection algorithms without primary current injection. The software includes an SCD/CID viewer that automatically validates configuration against received messages, identifying LNTYPE discrepancies, dataset references, or data attribute mismatches — before those discrepancies cause incorrect operation in the field.
