Surveillance camera systems and optronics for defense
Applied in sectors
Cohu — electronic surveillance division of Hensoldt AG, the German defense technology group derived from Airbus Defence — manufactures the most advanced long-range surveillance cameras for critical facility perimeter protection and border control. Their flagship platform is the MX-series: an EO/IR (electro-optical/infrared) camera system on a two-axis stabilized gimbal with visible and LWIR thermal image fusion in a single platform, capable of detecting human presence at 3,000 m and classifying vehicles at 5,000 m day or night. The sensors integrate continuous optical zoom, automatic target tracking, and intelligent video analytics — motion detection, line crossing, people counting — without a permanent operator.
Cohu MX's technical differentiator is gimbal stabilization: two-axis inertial stabilization with < 30 μrad pointing error eliminates movement introduced by mast vibration, wind, or mobile platform (vehicle, vessel). A stabilized sensor obtains sharp images of a moving target at 2,000 m from a mobile base — capability impossible for a fixed PTZ camera. Visible + LWIR image fusion in a single video stream lets the operator view with visible resolution during the day and thermography at night without changing interface or platform. The embedded video analytics module reduces operator workload: the system issues alerts for regions of interest and automatically tracks the flagged target without continuous intervention.

The Cohu MX range covers fixed installations (MX-10 on fixed mast, MX-15 on robotic tower), mobile platforms (MX-10M on 4x4 vehicle with 360° slip ring), and aerial platforms (gimbal version for Group 2-3 UAS). Integration with VMS (Video Management Systems) — Milestone, Genetec, Avigilon — allows incorporating Cohu as a perimeter sensor in the existing security management platform without replacing video infrastructure. The version with laser IR illuminator enables active nighttime operation when thermography is insufficient for target identification.
In Peru, priority applications are perimeter surveillance of strategic government facilities — Petroperu installations, operaciones de gas natural en Perú LNG plants, concentrator and steel plants — where early detection at 3,000 m activates response without alerting the intruder, surveillance of ports and maritime terminals (El Callao, Ilo, Paita) for maritime perimeter access control, and monitoring of remote border areas where there is no permanent patrol coverage and long-range thermography is the only effective sensor. Hensoldt's connectivity with European defense infrastructure makes Cohu eligible for projects co-financed by the EDF (European Defence Fund) and NATO Partnership for Peace programs.
